Missy elliott
1. Missy Elliott- Get Ur Freak On In the beginning of this music video we experience Missy Elliott’s interpretation of ‘Freak’. We see clips and pictures of the actual artists making a funny face’s which is lead to shots of random dancers in a low-lit setting with lots of dark plants and shadows which automatically makes us feel as though it’s very mysterious. The editor used computer-generated images of the dancers dancing slowly, this is when they use a series of images and put them together to make it look like as though the images are moving. Also at the beginning of the video it starts with a bird’s eye view so the audience can see what is going on and what the excitement is about. There is diagetic music playing and the dancers are dancing in the beat of the music. They show different people in different areas of the same place dancing to the same music. They are all getting ready for Missy Elliott who appears with her back turned to the camera. Her body is visible and rocking to the beat of the music. This builds up the tension. She then turns around and starts singing. When they introduce Missy Elliot they use artificial lighting making the scene brighter. Missy Elliott’s introduction is big and important because this video is promoting her and her song.
The title of the song is “Get Ur Freak On” this is implying that we reveal our wild side and put our “freak” on. The video narrates the lyrics and we notice that in the video because the video has weird people in it doing weird things. The fact that the video has people all dancing in an unusual way with very original and unique costumes makes the video interesting and memorable. The whole music video is a montage with the clips changing from the dancers to Missy Elliott and then changing to clips of the scene as a whole. The dancing and the choreography are very well done because all the dancers are on time to the music.
The music video has been shot from many different angles for example when Missy Elliot is first introduced we see her from a lower angle making her look bigger and more superior but then the clip changes to all the different people dancing to the music and then it goes back to Missy Elliott who is being shot close up. This makes an effect on the audience or the viewer because it allows them to join in with the song and the music because we see Missy Elliott dancing it makes us want to dance as well. There are a lot of simple transitions used to make the clip go from one place to another for example the editor just quickly changes the scene so it goes to the next clip.
The setting of the music video is in a very mysterious place and watching the video as an audience we can’t actually tell where it is based but it looks very mysterious and eerie. In the video we see a broken building with many floors and there is water falling from an upper level. Also there are many shadows and the dancers are also on different floors dancing while we have a close up of Missy Elliott. Even though there is a lot going on behind Missy Elliott our attention doesn’t divert from her.
In the video the woman are all wearing clothes that look like they live in the jungle, it is all very camouflage but it is still tight fitted. I personally think this was done to satisfy the male gaze. There is a specific dance that all the dancers and Missy Elliott do in the video every time the chorus comes and it is very catchy and easy to pick up. Every time you watch it you find yourself doing that dance. There is a part of the video which is very disturbing because Missy Elliott spits right into one of the male dancers mouth. This is very unusual and unhygienic and it makes the audience feel uncomfortable. It is also making a statement that relates to what the whole song is about this particular clip that tells us that it is okay to freaky things.
I really enjoy watching this video because it is very unique and diverse. There are many different elements to this video that attract certain people’s attention. For me personally it had to be the dancers and the music. I thought the dancers all dancing to the beat of the music was very interesting and well choreographed. Watching the professional dancers dancing it made me want to get up and dance as well. The song is setting a good message out to the audience that it is okay to be who you are and sometimes you need to “get ur freak on” to express yourself.
